SMO-SAOC Partnership

What began as an intensive review for military ophthalmology residents based in San Antonio has grown to be an internationally recognized course with more than 250 civilian and military attendees annually. Formerly known as the Brooke Army Medical Center Ophthalmology Review Course, it was founded in 1993 by William C. Lloyd III, MD, FACS. This five-day instructional course provides a comprehensive overview of clinical ophthalmology for residents and practicing ophthalmologists. Specific emphasis is placed on assisting participants in organizing their individual studies relevant to the annual OKAP, American Board of Ophthalmology examinations, and Maintenance Of Certificate (MOC). All lectures are delivered by board-certified ophthalmology teaching faculty. Due to Department of Defense restrictions on conferences and courses, the military no longer sponsors the event. The San Antonio Ophthalmology Course and the Society of Military Ophthalmology partnered in 2014 due to common objective and personnel, and the Society of Military Ophthalmology is now the official course sponsor.
