Program highlights:

  • Early surgical training that begins in the first year of residency

  • Active involvement with refractive surgery center

  • Busy Level 1 Trauma Center and state-of-the-art burn ward result in outstanding trauma and surgical training

  • Ocular surgery simulation lab available 24-7

  • First-year residents attend the one-month Houston Basic Sciences Course in Houston, TX

  • Third-year residents attend the Ocular Trauma Course in Washington, DC, which includes hands-on surgical training

  • Complete panel of subspecialists on faculty, including cornea, glaucoma, retina, neuro-ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, ocular pathology, and oculoplastic surgery

  • Joint training and weekly Grand Rounds with the ophthalmology department at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio (UTHSCA)

  • Strong research and academic foundation, including morning lectures, annual research event (Alamo Day) for all residents, and senior resident attendance at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting

  • Many residents do a Transitional Year Internship at San Antonio and follow a curriculum designed specifically for ophthalmologists, including rotations in neuro-radiology, neurology, ENT, neurosurgery, electives such as dermatology or anesthesia, and other specialties related to ophthalmology

  • Call coverage of one hospital at a time (do not have to drive back and forth between hospitals)

  • Both teaching hospitals in excellent locations, each a 15 minute drive from the fun of the Riverwalk at downtown San Antonio.
